How to charge for extra web design work
Separate a new request from a correction, estimate the extra effort, and seek agreement before starting. Includes a concrete fee example.
First decide what changed
A request for “one more page” is not automatically billable. Compare it with the agreed deliverables, revision allowance, and acceptance criteria. Correcting your own implementation mistake is different from adding a new booking flow. Write down the original deliverable and the requested difference before putting a price on it. If the agreement is unclear, discuss it; a calculator cannot resolve a contract dispute.
Estimate the whole addition
Use a small work breakdown: implementation, testing, and any newly agreed revision work. In this fictional example, a booking page needs four implementation hours and one revision hour. At USD 80 per hour, five hours gives a USD 400 baseline. Do not count the same revision twice. Tax, expenses, uncertainty, and commercial negotiation are separate decisions, not hidden calculator adjustments.
Make the decision easy to review
Show the added deliverable, the proposed fee, and the schedule impact together. Offer a choice between the original scope and the addition where appropriate. Wait for an explicit agreement through your normal process before starting the extra work. An encouraging reply is not necessarily an approval of the amount and date. Keep your project records; this guide is business communication guidance, not legal advice.
When the free calculation is enough
For a single known addition, hours multiplied by your rate may be all you need to assess its size. Use the free calculator below without entering a client name or project file. Its result is not an invoice or an amount automatically owed. If your real bottleneck is carrying a chosen estimate into a clear fee, date, and approval request, AddBriefly brings those steps together with fixed English drafts.
