Shopify CSV variants: options are not unique

Compare full option combinations within a product instead of deleting every row with a repeated handle.

A repeated handle is not the whole diagnosis

A product with several variants naturally occupies several records. Do not delete every repeated handle. Shopify’s options-not-unique guidance points to duplicate option values within a product. First identify the product, then compare the complete combinations. Preserve an original copy before sorting, deduplicating, or changing any row.

Compare complete combinations

In this fictional example, tee / Black / Small and tee / Black / Medium are distinct combinations. A second tee / Black / Small needs investigation. It might be an accidentally repeated record, or the source export might have lost another distinguishing option. Do not fix this by inventing a new size name; compare the intended catalog and the full set of option columns.

Protect the update context

Variant-related updates can depend on option-name and option-value columns. Shopify warns that omitting dependencies can recreate a default variant and remove existing variants. Do not minimize an update file simply by deleting columns you do not recognize. Read the current field guidance for the operation you are attempting, and review the store’s preview.

Know the limit of a local check

A checklist helps you remember to review identities and dependencies; it does not inspect your file. ImportReady Catalog can flag supported repeated option combinations and other local risks, but cannot compare against the live store or determine your intended variant identity. If two plausible same-width records have the wrong values, manual comparison may still be necessary. Do not treat an absence of findings as authorization to overwrite production data.
